The relay contacts look used, but not fused (Fig. 25). Things got so hot that one of the pins melted off. I will admit, I just don’t know. I have seen welded contacts and they are really stuck together with a little bluing around the edges. These contacts don’t look like that. Maybe this was a simple creepage failure, and the fire melted out the solder, but that’s hard to believe. And never ever doubt that software could be to blame. Ask any programmer and they will tell you how complex and tricky software is.

To accompany the 8-inch touchscreen in the 2019 XT4, Cadillac ditched the touch-sensitive panels that bedeviled earlier generations of CUE in favor of a rotary knob controller, a smaller volume knob (replacing the maddening touch-sensitive volume bar) and shortcut buttons to the audio, navigation and phone menus. The touchscreen, steering wheel controls and voice endure.

But we get it, Ford is moving to a digital gear selection technology – much like on several Lincolns (via the push-button selectors) and on the refreshed Edge and new Explorer. Even so, the new Shelby GT500’s rotary shifter simply doesn’t feel right. Let’s hope that the rest of the car makes up for it.

The reception area is clean and well funded. There are free-standing wardrobes, veneered on the outside with high­-definition photographs of forest vistas. In the bathroom there is no piped music but there is piped birdsong. People piss to the calls of nuthatches, or perhaps they are tree­creepers.

I pried the housing off the failed relay (Fig. 23). Both contact leaves had de-soldered from the board. At first blush, I would think the failure mode was that the contacts fused, and it just kept heating the empty kettle until the whole base got so hot that it de-soldered the relay, which was also self-heating from the current it was carrying. With no solder, it then started to burn.

The kettle design is very difficult and sophisticated since it crosses so many disciplines. There’s high-voltage electrical, electronics, mechanical, thermal, and fluid engineering. It’s a heck of a good team that did all of this work. You can see great engineering in consumer products since the high volumes will pay for a lot of good engineering and testing.

Oak Island: Advocates for sea turtles say a hefty fine is in store for whoever dug into a nest of loggerhead sea turtle eggs. The Oak Island Sea Turtle Protection Program says the nest was tampered with Monday. Sand was displaced from the covered hole, and it was burrowed into. The News & Observer reports none of the eggs were broken or harmed. But the group wants beachgoers to know that disturbing sea turtle nests carries a federal fine up to $50,000 and possible prison time. Last week, a woman was arrested in Miami after police said she stomped on sea turtle nests and poked them with a stake. Loggerhead turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act.

The handle subassembly is another feat of impressive engineering (Fig. 14). It’s a fine example of well-partitioned modular design. The microcontroller PCB has tact switches on the back that the buttons actuate. The electronics work without being assembled to the housing or keyboard or handle. This makes it easy to test in high-volume production.

In most ways, however, the new Continental GT has stayed the course, an unsurprising move given that the last one generated a record (for Bentley) 70,000 global sales. The car’s looks and interior have the same old-world charm and beautiful materials and craftsmanship, blended with new electronics that afford it a better touchscreen (which can be folded into the dashboard for a more classic appearance) and the latest active-safety technologies. Other small improvements include the convertible’s stiffer body shell, which no longer suffers cowl shake over rough pavement, and the usefully shaped trunk that in both the coupe and convertible swallowed two carry-on bags and briefcases without issues. The V-8 model remains more athletic, if only because its engine beckons you to drive harder and exploit the improved handling more than the lazier W-12 does. But if your wallet allows what your ego demands, we won’t judge you for upgrading to the 12.

That configuration of berm, map, Hot Cell, information chamber, and buried Storage Room—all set atop the casks of pulsing radioactive molecules entombed deep in the Permian strata—seems to me our purest Anthropocene architecture yet, and the greatest grave that we have so far sunk into the underland. Those repeated incantations—pitched somewhere between confession and caution—seem to me our most perfected Anthropocene text, our blackest mass.
