West Lafayette: Purdue University is planning several events commemorating the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing commanded by school alumnus Neil Armstrong. The university says events begin July 18 with a presentation on the landing by Apollo 11 flight director Gene Kranz, followed by a July 20 screening of “Armstrong,” a new documentary film featuring home videos shot by Armstrong and unseen footage from NASA. Purdue will host a special exhibition of items from its Armstrong archives July 19-20. Other July 20 events include children’s activities on the Purdue Mall and a lunar module landing celebration timed around the 4:17 p.m. touchdown ahead of Armstrong becoming the first person to walk on the moon. Armstrong, a 1955 Purdue graduate, died in 2012 at age 82.

Jackson: Persistent flooding across wildlife management areas has decimated some wildlife habitats and food supplies, leading the state to allow supplemental deer feeding in Issaquena and Warren counties. The executive director of the state Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks says the deer stuck on a flooded levee have depleted their resources. Russ Walsh says the stressed deer are in bad shape. Resident Melissa Lyons raises two cattle on the levee and says that “the only things thriving are the buzzards.” She says the deer are starved and weak, and her husband recently removed 20 dead deer from their hay field. Supplemental feeding requires a wildlife agency permit that expires this fall.

A few additional issues to note: Internet Explorer would not work on Wi-Fi. Opera yes, our Skyfire install, yes, Internet Exploder, no. (Samsung suggested it might be because of Opera.) Sprint’s updated Instinct and Verizon’s Dare, which we included as best-of-class examples of feature phones, don’t have Wi-Fi capabilities. We left out Opera Mini and Skyfire, since they both leave most of the hard work to servers which essentially spit out a kind of image file—besides, we don’t think this kind of internet-by-proxy browser will be around for much longer.

“In PA, we’re just used to not having it,” he said in an April interview. “And our scanning technology goes beyond the license plate anyways.”

The Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office says Bolzer had stopped a tractor he was driving and got off it to check a piece of equipment. Investigators say the tractor was apparently still in gear and rolled forward. Bolzer was caught by the implement.

iPhone What can we say? It’s still got the best mobile browser around. It crushes basically everything but Android’s browser—which is also based on WebKit—in speed and outclasses its still classy brother-from-another-mother (and everyone else) with the ease and elegance of its multitouch zooming. Some pages still give it fits, and it’s missing Flash support, but it really does deliver an unrivaled mobile web experience. We love it, but make no mistake we’re eagerly waiting for something better. (Mobile Firefox? Is it you?) Grade: A-
