A design problem showed up where Cuisinart assemblers had to use silicone sealant at the top of the handle electronics assembly (Fig. 13). This is obviously something added after testing or release. The problem with this kind of fix is that it’s expensive and uncontrolled. You can see a person had to glom the sealer on between the microcontroller housing and the lid release button housing. This isn’t repeatable, and that’s always bad in manufacturing. Since it’s hand work, it’s also expensive. Still, it must be cheaper than re-tooling the plastic dies to fix whatever water intrusion problem they had without the silicone sealer.

St. Peter: An invasion of gnats is presenting a risk to the health and lives of livestock in this southern Minnesota town. The Mankato Free Press reports that gnats cause weight loss and stress for any animal with their bites and by gathering around eyes and in airways. Brooke Knisley, who runs an organic produce farm with her husband in St. Peter, says one of her friends has lost 16 chickens to the gnats this year. Knisley says she’s trying to reduce the risk for her own flock by running fans in the chicken coop, hanging fly strips and placing vanilla-soaked rags near where the gnats congregate. Gnats are also an irritant for cattle and horses, and many owners are keeping their animals inside until the invasion passes.

Philadelphia: A mural by the artist who painted the official portrait of Michelle Obama is being dedicated in the city. Amy Sherald’s overall body of work represents everyday lives of black Americans. So it’s fitting that the 6-story-tall mural dedicated Thursday portrays Najee Spencer-Young, a 19-year-old participant in Philadelphia’s Mural Arts education program. Sherald tells the Philadelphia Inquirer she chose Spencer-Young during a class trip to her studio. The artist saw it as an opportunity to boost the self-esteem of the teenager and those who look like her. The mural depicts Spencer-Young in a black-and-white flower print trench coach and mustard yellow hat, looking confident and composed – and very imposing – against a bright blue background.

One area that I usually focus on when modifying a motorcycle is crash protection. If I am unfortunate enough to have a mishap, I hope to be able to ride the bike home. My first steps towards this goal are the KTM case protectors. The Clutch Cover Protection ($75) and the Ignition Cover Protection ($75) are simple bolt-on parts that should help keep the oil inside your cases in a slide. The orange of the CNC-machined aluminum protectors looks great. Installation only took 10 minutes. Simply replace the 5 bolts that hold this armor in place (along with releasing and re-torquing the other cover bolts). Still, I’m puzzled as to why the vulnerable water pump cover did not receive a factory protective option, too. I’ll keep looking for the appropriate piece in the aftermarket. 

The fit and finish of the materials used in the cabin help inspire confidence that the whole vehicle is well-built. I liked the steering wheel feel and grip as well as the gear-shift lever, which is very solid. The seats provide good support and are comfortable. Hyundai made sure to place soft-ish materials where occupants’ knees and elbows rest, making the overall driving position extremely comfortable.

Moving the handlebar clamps to the forward hole on the triple clamp and rotating the bar forward opened the riding position up just enough to improve highway comfort and allow for a tuck on the track.
