Guests at the 2019 Historic Farm Days tractor pull will see some displays of new and old horsepower, thanks to Illiana Pulling Association and Illinois Tractor Pulling Association. Tractor pulls are scheduled on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

While he was still farming, Zimmerman also began restoring antique tractors and old equipment — some of it purchased at scrap prices and some of it given to him from a friend’s fence row. Throughout the years, he’s restored about a dozen machines.

“I can remember tracing an old tin can to make a wheel and putting little finishing nails in the wood wheel to make a steel wheel out of it,” Zimmerman said.

The V-8 certainly sounds faster thanks to its more bellicose exhaust note. It also dances better with the new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that replaces the old model’s eight-speed automatic across the lineup. The prompt shifts are in sync with the engine’s quick-to-wind-up character. We wish the shift paddles mounted to the steering wheel weren’t located as far inboard of the wheel’s rim. They’re difficult to reach comfortably while keeping one’s hands firmly on the wheel, yet when reached initiate satisfyingly immediate gearchanges—and you’ll want to hold gears now and again just to wind out the highest-revving V-8 that Bentley has ever produced.

Once the canisters of waste have been deposited in Onkalo and all the reception cylinders are replete, the spiraling access ramp will be backfilled, the ventilation shafts will be backfilled, the lift shaft will be backfilled, and at last the mouth of the tunnel entrance will be backfilled—two million tons of bedrock and bentonite, sealing those canisters in place, keeping the future safe from the present.

“When we came up on the train tracks at Miller Road, we had no idea which way the locomotive was traveling,” Fetterhoff said.

That configuration of berm, map, Hot Cell, information chamber, and buried Storage Room—all set atop the casks of pulsing radioactive molecules entombed deep in the Permian strata—seems to me our purest Anthropocene architecture yet, and the greatest grave that we have so far sunk into the underland. Those repeated incantations—pitched somewhere between confession and caution—seem to me our most perfected Anthropocene text, our blackest mass.

“It depends on the direction traveling, but every time we’re encountering the front of a vehicle, that makes our jobs that much harder. Our officers will have to turn around to get a license plate number,” Saterfield said.

The automaker reports that the potential defect was first investigated after receiving “several field incidents” back on Dec. 18, 2018. Porsche says that there are no injuries or property damage connected to the recall, and that it launched it on June 5 “out of abundance of caution.”
